Sam Coslow

Sam Coslow (New York, 27 dicembre 1902 – Bronxville, 2 aprile 1982) è stato un paroliere, compositore e editore statunitense.

Fu autore di canzoni diventate classici del jazz (come My Old Flame, Cocktails for Two, Sing You Sinners).

Biografia

La sua carriera ebbe inizio nei primi anni venti scrivendo canzoni sia per artisti (ad esempio Al Jolson), sia per Broadway.

Dal 1929 (fino al 1938) fu messo sotto contratto dalla Paramount Pictures ad Hollywood, collaborando con vari compositori alla stesura di canzoni che divennero in seguito popolarissime, ma anche di musical.

Nei primi anni quaranta produsse per la MGM alcuni musical e cortometraggi, vincendo tra l'altro il suo primo Academy Award nel 1944 con il corto Heavenly Music.

Con il compositore Arthur Johnston creò centinaia di brani musicali destinati a rimanere indelebili nel tempo e interpretati da popolari artisti sia in ambito jazz che in quello pop.

Fu anche attivo sia come produttore cinematografico ed editoriale (attività svolta prevalentemente nel secondo dopoguerra, dopo il suo definitivo ritiro come autore musicale), che come analista di mercato.

Sposato con l'attrice Esther Muir (dal 1934 al 1948) ebbe una figlia, Jacqueline Coslow, pure lei attrice.
